Authentic Life at The Shed

At The Shed’s 2026 Gala, I knew John Legend, Lynn Nottage, and Whitney White would take home the Dan Doctoroff Disruptor Award for their upcoming world premiere of Imitation of Life. But the moment that rocked my world (and everyone else in the room) was when Legend, who wrote the production’s music and lyrics, took to the piano to perform two of the show’s songs, sung by Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren.

The night, held inside the innovative multidisciplinary arts center in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards, celebrated The Shed’s unique space and its commitment to groundbreaking artists like Legend, along with Nottage, who wrote Life’s book and White, who will direct the upcoming musical.

Imitation of Life begins at The Shed on November 21.

Black music has always shaped the culture. On September 24, the Black Music Action Coalition presented a love letter to Black music and the artists at the forefront.

BMAC’s sixth annual gala, presented by Live Nation and held in Beverly Hills, honored Patti LaBelle with the Icon Award, Common with the Harry Belafonte Change Agent Award and Public Enemy with the Social Impact Award. Music executives Nicole Wyskoarko and Tina Davis were recognized for their leadership, alongside The Team and Universal Music Group’s Global Impact Team.

The room had moments: Chanté Moore and Le’Andria Johnson paid tribute to LaBelle, Common reflected on Belafonte as inspiration, and Chuck D and Flavor Flav led a “Fight the Power” chant. The work extends beyond the stage. Gala proceeds support BMAC’s grants, music industry training and monthly assistance for Altadena families affected by the Eaton Fires. As BMAC’s Willie “Prophet” Stiggers reminded the crowd, celebration means more when it leads to action.

Dedicated contributions to civil, cultural, and societal contributions to the arts don’t go unnoticed. The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, presented the Legion of Honor — the country’s highest accolade — to producer, author and former ambassador Nicole Avant and her husband, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, highlighting Avant’s commitment to diverse stories on a global level and giving a voice to the underrepresented.  The private ceremony took place at the Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, in the south of France.

“Cycle” for a Good Life

FERG gave his latest single, “Cycle,” a rollout that moved as much as the song did. Before it dropped on September 18, the Harlem rapper hosted a skate party and invited fans to get in on the action. He rode alongside the fitness community at Flo Fridays at AARMY, took to New York’s streets for a group cycling event on release day and joined a 5K community run with Kate Mackz. Together, the events reflected the growing role fitness and healthy living have played in his life.
