Ryan Coogler Taking ‘X-Files’ to Series with Hulu

The truth is out there, and it comes with a series pickup! Hulu has officially greenlit a series run for Ryan Coogler‘s previously announced reboot of The X-Files.

From Proximity Media, Coogler’s production arm, the reimagined 1990s sci-fi drama stars EBONY’s July 2025 cover star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as the “highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond” who chase down cases involving long-forgotten unexplained phenomena. Deadwyler and Patel will play new characters, rather than reconstituted versions of the roles first inhabited by the series original stars, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny.

Coogler wrote, directed, and executive produced the pilot. The Sinners Oscar winner, who watched the legacy series with his mom, has vowed to blend the “monster-of-the-week” episodes with an “overarching conspiracy, promising a mix of fresh perspectives and genuine scares.”

The series is Coogler’s latest venture into science fiction; he and his team have several notable science-fiction and sci-fi-adjacent programs across both film and television.

That list has Disney+’s Ironheart and the animated anthology series Eyes of Wakanda. Coogler is also developing Animorphs, a live-action series adaptation of the hit 1990s sci-fi book series about teenagers with alien shape-shifting abilities. His feature films include the Black Panther franchise for Marvel and a production credit on Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Coogler has said diversity and cultural representation are central to his artistic identity, and that inclusive storytelling is both a personal responsibility and a tool for creating higher-quality projects. No doubt this latest installment in his growing empire will carry that seal of approval.

For Deadwyler, sci-fi is not new territory. Last year, she headlined 40 Acres, a dystopian action thriller set in the Canadian wilderness. She’s a fan of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower; the author is often considered the Queen Mother of Science Fiction and the godmother of Afrofuturism.

Industry insiders expect The X-Files reboot to debut on Hulu in 2027. Fans can watch the original series currently on the streamer.
