Normani Is Entering Her Freedom Era, and the VMAs Are Part of the Evolution

Normani has never needed excess to make a red carpet moment land. Her approach has always been a little more precise: a strong silhouette, great glam and the kind of confidence that makes even the simplest look feel intentional. Heading into the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, that philosophy feels even more pronounced. For the singer, this chapter is less about proving she can command attention and more about deciding exactly how she wants that attention to look.

“At this point in my career, what I look for in a red carpet is evolution and elevation,” Normani tells EBONY. “I’m a minimalist, and I love simplicity, but just execution.” It is an approach that has served her well. Over the years, Normani has moved between body-conscious gowns, sharp tailoring, skin-baring silhouettes and full-on fashion fantasy without losing herself underneath the clothes. The common denominator has increasingly become restraint. Even when the fashion is dramatic, Normani never appears swallowed by the look.

That same sense of clarity carries into beauty. When asked what makes her feel most beautiful today, she doesn’t name a product, treatment or glam trick. She points to family. “Being able to look at myself and also see my mom in me and my dad in me,” she says. “I have my dad’s nose, and I just love it. They’re always with me.”

Still, a girl has to come prepared. Normani’s red carpet emergency kit is refreshingly practical: double-stick tape, seamless underwear, brow gel and lip gloss. “Panty lines ain’t cute,” she jokes. Consider that your free Fashion Week advice for next season.

For all the glamour surrounding VMAs weekend, home is never particularly far away. Born in Atlanta, with deep family ties to New Orleans and raised in Houston from age nine, Normani speaks about Louisiana culture as something embedded in how she sees the world. “We have such an appreciation and celebration with just how we view everything,” she says. “New Orleans will always and forever be in my blood.”

That connection made her partnership with Popeyes feel less like a celebrity-brand pairing and more like nostalgia served on a biscuit. Normani remembers Popeyes being part of her childhood and specifically recalls the dirty rice once available on New Orleans menus. The brand’s new Honey Chicken Biscuit brings several of those comfort-food memories together. Her review is appropriately Louisiana: the crispy chicken against the sweetness works, but the biscuit seals the deal. “That biscuit too sticks to the roof of your mouth,” she says. “That’s how you know it’s a good biscuit.”

Yet beneath the fashion, beauty and comfort food is a much bigger statement about where Normani sees herself going next. Asked to define this era, she lands on words that feel particularly deliberate: “self-governance,” “bold,” “unapologetic,” “liberating” and, finally, “freedom.”

Perhaps that is why the VMAs remain exciting for her. The awards have been the backdrop for some major Normani moments, but this year she is also looking outward. “I love art in all forms, and I’m such a girls’ girl, so I’m always rooting for the girls,” she says. “I love innovation. I love seeing growth, especially just amongst my peers.”

Evolution and elevation may be what Normani wants from a red carpet, but they also sound like a pretty fitting description of the woman walking it.
