During her “Money and Mindfulness: A Conversation with Nia Long panel, presented by Ally at the 2024 American Black Film Festival, she casually mentioned she was working on a book, which she had announced a year earlier. The quintessential leading lady, from Love Jones and Soul Food to The Best Man franchise, has effortlessly navigated love, friendship, heartbreak and the complexities of womanhood on screen. Now she’s turning the lens inward and has revealed the release date for her memoir, The Sound of Purpose, which drops May 25, 2027.
On Instagram, the Michael actress teased that she’d been keeping a secret she could finally share before pulling her new book into frame.
The Sound of Purpose traces Long’s journey from Brooklyn to Iowa, where she was one of only four Black students in her school, and her path to Hollywood. She also reflects on racism, colorism and sexism in the industry, with behind-the-scenes stories involving Regina King, Will Smith, Whoopi Goldberg and other well-known names.
In her Instagram Reel, Long invited followers to reflect on their own purpose, asking them to consider the sound, the vibration and what makes them feel passionate, fiery, happy and loved. She explained that finding those answers has been part of her own journey.
Long described writing the book as “the most healing thing that I’ve ever done for myself,” stating that the journey started with self love.
“I can’t wait to share my story with you…This is a love letter to myself, it’s a love letter to you, it’s a love letter to my children,” she continued. “It’s a love letter to any woman who has carried more than she thought she could ever handle.”
Published by Gallery Books’ 13a imprint, The Sound of Purpose is available for preorder ahead of its May 25, 2027 release.
