Black-owned brands deserve more than a moment in the spotlight, and H&M is putting some retail muscle behind that sentiment. The global fashion retailer is joining forces with Maison Black for the second consecutive year to bring back The Style Shop, a curated shopping experience celebrating Black designers, entrepreneurs and creatives across fashion, beauty, art and lifestyle. With 26 brands participating, the initiative is making its way to four H&M locations across the country this December, giving shoppers an opportunity to discover new names while putting their dollars directly into Black-owned businesses.
The partnership, which debuted last year, returns with an expanded footprint that includes Miami during the city’s highly anticipated Art Week festivities, followed by stops in Los Angeles and New York. For shoppers who appreciate a good fashion find with a story behind it, consider this an opportunity to discover the designers and creatives who deserve a little more space in your closet, beauty cabinet and home.
Curated by Maison Black founder and Chief Creative Officer Tori Nichel, The Style Shop is designed to introduce emerging and established Black-owned brands to a broader audience through H&M’s retail network. More importantly, the initiative addresses an ongoing conversation within the fashion industry: how do we move beyond celebrating Black creativity and begin creating sustainable opportunities for the businesses behind it?
“We are beyond excited to continue our partnership with H&M and bring The Style Shop back for a second holiday season,” Nichel shared in a statement. “What makes this partnership so special is the opportunity to leverage H&M’s expansive retail footprint to reimagine the shopping experience through a more inclusive lens.”
For Nichel, whose platform has become a destination for discovering Black fashion talent through storytelling, commerce and community, the partnership is about much more than a temporary retail installation. It’s about creating access, building relationships and introducing designers to consumers who might not otherwise encounter their work.
The lineup reflects the range of Black creativity across multiple categories. Fashion enthusiasts can expect to discover brands such as House of Aama, Busayo and Bühne Noir by actress Novi Brown, while accessories and beauty lovers will have opportunities to shop Vontelle Eyewear, Harlem Perfume Co. and other independent businesses. Artists and lifestyle entrepreneurs will also be represented, with Ashley Nora Art among the participating names.
“We’re proud to continue our partnership with Maison Black and bring The Style Shop back for a second year,” said Donna Dozier Gordon, Head of Inclusion & Diversity at H&M North America. She added that the expansion is intended to connect Black-owned brands with new audiences during one of the most important retail periods of the year.
The timing is particularly significant. As conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion continue to shape the retail landscape, initiatives like The Style Shop offer a tangible example of what supporting Black-owned businesses can look like beyond a marketing campaign. Visibility matters, but so does access to customers, physical retail space and the economic opportunities that come with both.
For an industry that frequently looks to Black culture for inspiration, creating more pathways for Black entrepreneurs to build lasting businesses should be part of the conversation. The next generation of heritage Black-owned brands cannot emerge without opportunities to grow, reach new consumers and establish themselves in spaces where shopping habits are formed.
The Style Shop will kick off December 3 at H&M’s Lincoln Road location in Miami Beach, featuring brands including JLANI, Keva J Swimwear and Tribal Eyes. On December 5, the experience heads to Westfield Century City in Los Angeles with House of Aama, Bühne Noir and Cocoacentric among the participating businesses.
New York shoppers will have two opportunities to get in on the action. The SoHo location will host its installment on December 12 with Busayo, Gwen Beloti, Harlem Perfume Co. and Vontelle Eyewear, while the series concludes December 19 at H&M’s Harlem store with KIN Apparel, EENY Eyewear, Sanctuaire and more.
With the holiday shopping season approaching, The Style Shop offers a reminder that supporting Black-owned businesses can be as simple as being intentional about where we spend our money. And with 26 brands getting an opportunity to introduce their work to new audiences, the real value of this partnership may extend well beyond the holiday season.
After all, discovering the next great Black-owned brand is exciting. Helping ensure it has the opportunity to become a household name is even better.
