Las Vegas Aces superstar, A’ja Wilson, is building her G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) case, day-by-day. Wilson etched her name in the WNBA history books once again with a historic performance on Tuesday night.
Wilson dropped an astonishing 53 points, leading the Aces to a 112-100 victory over the Atlanta Dream in Atlanta last night. This accomplishment made her the third woman to join the exclusive 50-point club in a WNBA game; Liz Cambage, who most recently set the bar in 2018, and Riquna Williams, with her standout 51-point performance in 2013.
Her performance was not limited to scoring, as Wilson showcased her dominance on both ends of the court. Shooting an impressive 16 of 23 from the field and a remarkable 20 of 21 from the free-throw line, she also made her presence known on the boards with seven rebounds, and four blocks. This was one of the greatest all-around performances basketball has ever seen. This historic feat followed her recent season-high of 40 points less than two weeks ago, proving that Wilson can go off on any night.
With the star’s outburst, the Las Vegas Aces improved their season record to an impressive 29-4, solidifying their position at the top of the league standings. This performance also might’ve locked in Wilson’s second straight MVP award, as this will undeniably be an unforgettable moment for MVP voters. It couldn’t have come at a better time, as the WNBA season is winding down and the race for the MVP award is heating up.
Wilson’s only true opposition for the award this year is New York Liberty star, Breanna Stewart. Stewart has been instrumental in leading the Liberty to a commendable 25-7 record and second place in the WNBA standings. She also has been lighting up the scoreboard, as earlier this month she became the first WNBA player ever to score 40 three times in a single season. But last night in Atlanta, Wilson put all debates, at least for this season, to rest.
Her performance not only tied an all-time scoring record but also elevated the Aces to their 29th win, which is the most in franchise history. The Aces are having a dream season, and if they finish it out and repeat as champions, A’ja Wilson won’t be in MVP debates anymore.
She’ll be in the greatest of all time debates with the Lisa Leslie’s and Candace Parker’s.
