You know how some travelers say the hotel “doesn’t matter” because we’re “only there to sleep?” Tuh! Yeah, I can’t relate to that and will never travel with the likes of them. Lodging is the biggest part of the trip — because I’m not just staying anywhere — and sometimes it’s the whole vacation! I mean, there are absolutely occasions when the purpose of the getaway is simply to fly a few hours and stay put at your stunning resort that’s fully loaded with all the trimmings. And when that’s the case, you can find me poolside on my fourth cocktail, thank you very much.
What makes trips like this even better is when the reservation is at a Black-owned hotel or resort. If that sounds rare, it’s because they kind of are. According to the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators & Developers, Black folks own less than 3% of hospitality accommodations worldwide. So when there’s an opportunity to support one during your travels —especially when the property will absolutely surpass your expectations — the answer is simple.
We know your time is valuable, so we went ahead and did some digging for you and found some of the best Black-owned hotels, resorts and bed & breakfasts throughout the world. This list features properties from New York City to Bali to the Caribbean, and are among our favorites based on aesthetics (because you need to get those Instagram flicks off!), amenities, location, and reviews.
From full-blown resorts run by generations of families to charming inns in historic mansions, this list of our seven favorite Black-owned hotels and resorts will have you sending your manager that PTO request before you even scroll to the end.
The Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Virginia
Perfectly situated between Virginia’s charming wine and horse country and the nation’s capital, this five-star resort has nearly everything you need and want for an idyllic getaway. Opened in 2013 by BET co-founder Sheila Johnson, the property is perched on an impressive 340 acres and boasts a 23,000-square-foot spa and 14,000-square-foot stable. On top of that, it offers everything from zip lining, archery, and fishing to horseback riding and family-friendly activities. The Salamander Collection’s portfolio includes a handful of other exceptional properties too, like Hotel Bennett in Charleston, South Carolina and Innisbrook Resort in Tampa Bay, Florida, among several others.
Stonefield Luxury Villa Resort in Soufriere, St. Lucia
This adults-only property has 17 unique villas, each with its own private pool, terrace, a sizable hammock, and an outdoor shower. Every villa has its own unique name, view, and overall vibe that truly makes this property one of a kind. And the privacy of the villas, which are available in one- to five-bedroom options, makes this ideal for a romantic couple’s getaway or solo trips where your phone does not come off DND. When you do venture away from the room, though, the renowned Mango Restaurant can’t be skipped. It’s a true farm-to-table experience, offering a Creole-leaning menu that flaunts local, organic produce, meats, and more.
The Ivy Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland
If you love historic East Coast charm with dashes of modern decor and conveniences, then the Ivy Hotel will fulfill your wildest dreams. The Baltimore mansion, owned by the husband-and-wife duo Eddie and Sylvia Brown, offers eight suites and nine bedrooms, all decadently decorated. The property is palatial yet intimate and boasts some of the most stunning common areas, like a lush courtyard garden and the most divine billiards room you ever did see. The Ivy runs almost like an all-inclusive resort, too; everything, minus dinner and spa treatments, is included in the room rate, like breakfasts, private car service, in-room fridge goodies, afternoon tea, evening cocktails, midnight snacks and more.
Hotel Sages in Bali, Indonesia
Hotel Sages is a minimalist chic lover’s paradise. It’s the first Black-woman-owned boutique hotel in all of Indonesia and boasts only nine king suites. If you desperately need to prioritize rest, realignment and wellness in a tranquil, thoughtfully curated space, look no further. From the natural textures and neutral tones in the rooms to the sunrise yoga, floating sound baths, and mineral baths, this property will have you feeling rejuvenated and wondering if you can extend your stay.
Zambezi Sands by Batoka in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
It’s kind of hard to believe that a place like this really exists. Zambezi Sands is truly out of your wildest dreams, especially if you can’t decide between a luxurious, nature-heavy or adventurous vibe. Here, you literally don’t have to choose—you get them all. From guided safari drives where elephants, giraffes, rhinos and more are the stars of the show, to starting your morning with a cup of coffee while overlooking the Zambezi River, this place is truly magical. Add in that your room is one of 10 glamorous tent-style accommodations, each with a private pool or deck, and you’ll want to make this your permanent residence.
Awkwaaba Bed & Breakfasts in New York City
There are so many ways to experience this B&B, and, thankfully, three locations to do so. Likely the most notable of the batch is the Awkwaaba Mansion in the historic Stuyvesant Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. You’ll get everything from old world charm, like ornate fireplaces and to-die-for crown molding, seamlessly blended with thoughtful, modern touches centering Blackness. If you’re looking for privacy, this is a great option since there are only four bedrooms on the property and each has its own en-suite bathroom. And during the warmer seasons, you can even choose the glamping option complete with roasting marshmallows, BBQ, and more. The other two locations are in Philadelphia and the Poconos, Pennsylvania.
Spice Island Beach Resort in St. George’s, Grenada
There are 64 sumptuous villa-style suites on this family-friendly property where you truly will have no worries thanks to its all-inclusive model. Snuggled along two miles of the Grand Anse Beach, this resort offers paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and beachside yoga, and a separate all-day space strictly for the kids. The design is elevated but approachable and truly comfortable for everyone from young families to young couples.
