Sinners continued its nomination domination reign with this morning’s announcements for the 98th Academy Awards. Ryan Coogler’s vampire masterpiece scored 16 nominations, the most of any film this year, and broke the record once held by La La Land with 14. Coogler received nominations in three of the Academy’s biggest categories: Original Screenplay, Directing, and Best Picture.
Sinners stars Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan each earned their first-ever award nomination. Jordan received a well-deserved nod in the Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role category for his dual portrayal of twins. Lindo received what has been considered long-overdue recognition with a nomination for Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
Mosaku and Teyana Taylor both earned Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role nominations for their work in Sinners and One Battle After Another, respectively, joining a time-honored club of Black women nominated in the Academy’s Best Supporting Actress category. With a lineage that stretches back to Hattie McDaniel’s groundbreaking 1939 win, this is the largest award category won by Black actors in the academy’s nearly 100 years of existence. Past winners include Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Mo’Nique, Octavia Spencer, Lupita Nyong’o, Viola Davis, Regina King, Ariana DeBose and most recently, Da’Vine Joy Randolph.
Sinners received a nomination in the newly created Casting category for Francine Maisler; Costume Design for Academy Award-winning Ruth E. Carter, and Original Song for ‘I Lied To You,’ Music and Lyric by Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Goransson. The film also received nominations for Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Production Design, Sound, and Visual Effects.
The Perfect Neighbor, which recounts the senseless murder of 35-year-old Ajike “A.J.” Shantrell Owens by an irate neighbor, received a nomination in the Documentary Feature Film category.
