Pastor Mike Todd Addresses a “Distraction of Focus” In Your Relationships

Druski’s recent viral skit about the theatrics of modern megachurch culture stirred the internet into a frenzy. Everyone had an opinion — from those who agreed with Druski’s skewing to those who felt it was an attack on religion itself. For pastors behind the pulpit, a decision had to be made: ignore the event’s significance or make their thoughts known.

Pastor Mike Todd, who some tagged as inspiration for the parody, chose to use it as an opportunity to speak out about what he calls a “distraction of focus.” And that’s not just over a viral moment that pulled everyone’s attention. He is letting us know that lack of focus can also be one of the things that derail a relationship.

“If you don’t put the main thing as the main thing, it will begin to drift and make you go sideways,” he told EBONY while discussing Relationship Goals, the new romantic comedy based on his book of the same name. The self-help guide lays down a faith-based blueprint for navigating dating, marriage and sex.

The movie follows Leah and Jarrett, work rivals and former lovers, as they compete for the same job. Once considered an unfaithful rogue, Jarret is now preaching a sharply defined path for relationships, thanks to the teachings in the book, which Todd reinforces in real life.

“When you don’t have anything you’re looking for, you end up hurting people. A lot of people have broken hearts and end up in toxic relationships because they’re just trying things and not aiming at anything,” Todd explained. With the right principles and values — themes embedded into the film — “it could change your life.”

Where to start? How about with yourself?

“I tell everybody to fully embrace your season of singleness ’cause there is some stuff you cannot do when you are in relationships that are of a value right now,” he shared.

Your single era is the perfect time to focus inward and align the positive traits you can actually bring to the table when you couple up. “When you’re looking for your relationship goals, make sure you are one; it attracts the right things into your situation.”

Once in a relationship, Todd points to one major red flag that shouldn’t be ignored: a partner who refuses to acknowledge the relationship publicly.

“Any person who is trying to keep what they’re saying is so good under wraps for the sake of ‘not wanting nobody in my business,’ No, no, no,” he declared.

“When you experience something good, you want other people to know this is how you feel about it. There is something very powerful about putting on display what you love and what you desire to be a part of.”

Whether you agree with Druski or not, a dating era defined by no-strings-attached sneaky links, blurred boundaries, and viral distractions calls for focus. In that sense, Relationship Goals is more than a romantic comedy—it’s a challenge to be honest about what you’re building with one of the most important people in your life.

And if you can’t, it’s time to leave the flock.

Relationship Goals premieres February 4 on Prime Video.
