HBCU AWAREFEST Has a Noble Goal: Eliminate College Debt and Build Generational Wealth for HBCU Students

With Black college graduates averaging nearly $53,000 in loans for their educational endeavors, there is a need to find ways to increase access to education without crippling and overwhelming debt. Since 2020, the Student Freedom Initiative (SFI) has been singularly focused on providing students attending HBCUs and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with greater freedom after their educational pursuits by providing loan and grant programs funded by its donors and the community. And now it’s about to take on its biggest fundraising effort yet.

The organization has partnered with Live Nation Urban (LNU) for HBCU AWAREFEST, a nationwide call to action through workshops, panel discussions, and live music, designed to ignite conversations, spark action and raise real funds to tackle student loan debt for HBCU students.

Positioning itself as the largest fundraising effort ever undertaken to benefit HBCUs, this newly formed partnership and event will benefit SFI’s Student Freedom Loan Agreement, an alternative to Parent PLUS Loans. Federally backed PLUS loans are supposed to help pay for a child’s education; however, borrowers face harsh consequences, such as higher interest rates and no grace period for repayment, making it difficult for low-income Black families to build generational wealth.

HBCU AWAREFEST, slated to take place at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on March 26, 2026, will be a celebration of music, motivation and momentum. The festival features a stacked slate of performances, including Jill Scott, John Legend, Common, Jeezy, Earth, Wind & Fire, GloRilla, Metro Boomin, Kirk Franklin, and more.

Event speakers include professional athletes Chris Paul, Angel Reese and Ryan Clark, as well as music and theatrical artists Larenz Tate, Big Boi, 2 Chainz and more. Philanthropist Robert F. Smith, who launched SFI, will give remarks at the festivities, along with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. The goal is to normalize conversations about economic freedom and strengthen the pathways to get there in real time.

“We are incredibly excited about the coalition and movement that we are building to end the student loan debt crisis for our nation’s HBCU students,” stated Keith Shoates, the president and CEO of Student Freedom Initiative.

“In addition to these amazing performers, we have enlisted AWAREFEST Ambassadors, showing the breadth of our ecosystem of mission-aligned partners. These individuals will help to spread the word and share the urgency of our mission to tackle the racial wealth gap through the lens of education.”

The gathering of Black entertainment powerhouses and leading voices at HBCU AWAREFEST— one that could become an annual anchor event in the city (and cities across the nation) — is the precedent we need to make student debt manageable and, hopefully, eradicate it for good.
