Grambling State Secures Trademark for its “G” Logo After Almost 30 Years

Grambling State University secured a major win in court this month. The HBCU secured its iconic “G” logo under a US trademark. The historic logo has represented the school’s athletic excellence and pride since the 1970s. However, the process of securing the trademark, led by the Division of Administration and Business Affairs and counsel Kean Miller, had been ongoing since 1998.

This new milestone follows a coordinated effort to address prior court refusals to grant the trademark while considering other nationally recognized “G” marks, such as those associated with the University of Georgia and the Green Bay Packers.

“This registration represents more than a legal achievement; it is a declaration of ownership over our history, our excellence, and our brand,” said Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr, president of Grambling State University, in a statement released by the institution. “VP Moses’ leadership through the process was exceptional. She worked diligently with Kean Miller and ensured that our university’s interests were advanced with clarity and confidence.

Because of our stewardship and collaboration, Grambling State now stands on an even stronger footing to protect and leverage one of our most powerful institutional assets.”

The newly secured trademark grants the university exclusive rights to use and license the logo, enabling further expansion. That means more partnerships, merchandise, and visibility. During the process, all parties engaged in a professional and thoughtful dialogue to ensure their respective trademarks could coexist with clear, explicit distinctions.

By carefully refining the application, negotiating agreements, and presenting strong legal arguments that highlighted the distinctiveness and longstanding use of Grambling State’s trademark, the University successfully obtained approval.

“Our brand is one of our most valuable institutional assets. The “G” is instantly recognizable across generations of alumni, student-athletes, band members, and supporters worldwide,” said Brandon A Logan, VP for University Advancement and Innovation. “Federal trademark protection allows us to elevate and monetize the power of the Grambling State brand strategically, ensuring that when people see the black and gold ‘G,’ they know it stands for excellence, tradition, and enduring legacy.”
