‘Bridgerton’s Queen Charlotte’ Showcases Black Hair Artistry as Cultural Legacy and Empowerment

As the number one Bridgerton fan, I’ve been enamored by Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’s stunning wigs throughout each season, and Season 4 has delivered the exceptional artistry we’ve come to yearn for and expect. Yet what’s proven equally impressive are the head-turning braided hairstyles Queen Charlotte, portrayed by actor Golda Rosheuvel, has served during the Season 4 press tour.

“For Queen Charlotte’s press run, the braided styles were intentionally rooted in heritage, elegance and storytelling,” celebrity hairstylist Susy tells EBONY. “Braids have always been more than just hairstyles in Black culture; they carry history, identity and artistry. The looks we created blended classic braiding traditions with a modern, regal approach to reflect both cultural pride and contemporary beauty.”

And that context matters. When it comes to how Black women style their hair, beauty has never been separate from meaning. Our styles carry memory. They signal lineage. They speak before we do. So, when textured and culturally specific looks step onto global red carpets, they are doing more than completing an outfit. They are affirming presence. They are claiming space. “I believe showcasing these styles in mainstream spaces helps normalize textured hair and honor our traditions,” the hairstylist shares. “These styles expand the beauty conversation so Black women continue to feel seen, celebrated and represented at the highest levels.”

Ultimately, these braided moments are about more than a press tour or a beauty headline. They are a reminder that Black hair has always been architecture, language and legacy. On international stages where spectacle often overshadows substance, Rosheuvel’s braided looks moved with intention. They did not ask for validation. They embodied it. And in doing so, they reinforced what EBONY has always understood: when Black women wear their heritage openly, it is not a trend cycle. It is tradition continuing in real time.

Textured Triangle Haircut w/ Koroba Braids:

“This look celebrates natural hair kinky texture with a triangle haircut while incorporating Koroba braiding details,” Susy shares. “It reflects the beauty of Afro kinky hair in its full, regal state while honoring Koroba braids.”

Sculptural Square Updo:

“I created a square updo inspired by her outfit to showcase a different shape,” the stylist explains. “While circles are common, I believe squares and unique geometric shapes will be the next trend.”

Shuku Hairstyle:

“Inspired by my Nigerian heritage, the hair is braided to the crown with braids in the front as bangs,” Susy says. “This style highlights elegance and cultural continuity, elegance, and traditional African styles within modern press and fashion spaces.”

Tanavoho Braids Updo:

“Inspired by the people of Madagascar, we incorporated Afro balls with braided balls to add dimension,” Susy highlights. “This piece pushes braids into avant-garde territory, emphasizing Black hair as an artistic medium.”
