Beyoncé Reveals Why JAY-Z Finally Combed Out His Locs After Eight Years in Cécred’s New Film The Blueprint

For years, JAY-Z’s locs became as recognizable as his lyrics. The thick, freeform wicks were more than a hairstyle. They were a symbol of growth, fatherhood and a man comfortable enough in his skin to let time do its thing. But in a surprise reveal this Father’s Day, Cécred pulled back the curtain on why the rap icon decided it was finally time for a change.

The brand’s latest YouTube documentary, The Blueprint, named after his 2001 album, offers an intimate look at JAY-Z’s six-day journey of combing out more than eight years of locs ahead of his appearance at The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. According to Beyoncé, the decision had nothing to do with trends and everything to do with family.

A few months before the show, JAY-Z told her he wanted to remove his locs and wear a fro in honor of his late father. The Philadelphia concert carried special meaning. His father’s favorite sports team was from the city, and his father famously wore a fro throughout much of his life.

“Now, I wasn’t all that convinced he’d be able to comb out his locs considering he had such thick, long wicks and his hair had been locking for over eight years,” Beyoncé admits in the film.

But perhaps the most touching revelation came when Beyoncé shared the real reason JAY-Z grew his hair in the first place.

“I thought it was always beautiful that the real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his hair,” she says.

Beyoncé recalls a moment when Blue Ivy was just 5 years old and struggling with confidence surrounding her natural hair. In response, JAY-Z began growing his own hair, creating a visible reminder that their textures were connected. The gesture would eventually come full circle when Blue later became the voice behind the beloved animated adaptation of Hair Love.

The film is filled with family moments, including scenes of Blue Ivy helping detangle her father’s locs with a Cécred comb. What could have been a simple salon appointment instead became a multi-generational affair, with Beyoncé describing the process as a true family effort.

Of course, no Beyoncé story would be complete without a little humor. Reflecting on JAY-Z’s hair journey, she referenced Destiny’s Child’s 2004 hit “Soldier,” joking, “Who would’ve thunk all of this healthy hair could grow beyond that low-cut Caesar with the deep waves?”

Throughout the documentary, Beyoncé proudly reveals that JAY-Z is one of Cécred’s most loyal customers. Celebrity hairstylist Nakia Rachon Collins, who led the painstaking detangling process, credits both JAY-Z’s patience and his consistency with maintaining remarkably healthy hair throughout the years.

The process was anything but easy. Collins and her team spent nearly a week carefully working through each loc using Cécred’s Detangling Spray, Moisturizing Deep Conditioner, Moisture Sealing Lotion and Hair & Scalp Oil. Some sections required hours of hand-separating buildup before a comb could even pass through. At times, products were left on overnight to soften the roots and allow the hair to gradually release.

“Day five getting my head combed out,” JAY-Z says in one scene. “It’s not for the faint of heart.”

Still, Beyoncé says the secret ingredients weren’t just the products.

“I think the key ingredients are patience and love.”

By the end of the journey, JAY-Z’s hair was deep-conditioned, trimmed, blow-dried and eventually braided before making its debut. The result was a head full of healthy hair that stunned fans online and served as living proof of what years of consistency can produce.

What begins as a hair transformation story ultimately becomes something much bigger. The Blueprint is a reminder that Black hair has always been about more than style. It’s memory. It’s legacy. It’s fatherhood. It’s the quiet ways Black parents show up for their children.

And in JAY-Z’s case, it was eight years of growth rooted in love for a daughter who needed to know that her hair was already perfect.
