Cardi B has never been one to stay silent when someone has said or done something that needed a retort. Her latest? On July 29, The “JEALOUSY” rapper was performing a set a Drai’s Beachclub in Las Vegas when an attendee hurled a drink at her. Cardi responded by tossing her microphone in that direction and scolding the attendee. Security quickly intervened and the concert continued without further incident.
Cardi’s decision to respond to her critics head-on started early in her career. Pressed about her plastic surgery, she posted on Instagram, “I don’t get why y’all gotta body shame b*#%$@s who got their bodies done,” adding that a woman should do what she wants to look the way she perceives herself.
After revealing her first pregnancy during a performance on Saturday Night Live in 2018, Cardi responded to those who said she wasn’t ready to be a mom. In an interview with The Breakfast Club, she declared, “You know what? I’m a grown woman. I’m 25 years old. I’m gonna say this in the most humblest way … I’m a schmillionaire, you know what I’m saying? And I’m prepared for this.”
Cardi once again used social media to respond to a fan who said she was afraid to put out a second album. “I’m never afraid of numbers … and I don’t have to put out another album if I don’t want to. I eats good off my diamond records alone,” she replied, adding a tweet stating that her “2019 Arena Tour” was the first concert tour in history where a female rapper averaged more than $1 million gross per show.
Cardi dealt with people criticizing her look without makeup in 2021. In true Cardi B fashion, she posted a message to her 169 million followers on Instagram stating, “I’ve never been afraid to show my real self. When you on top, the miserable and the ugly love to screenshot pictures while you in motion, then criticize your face. I’m confident in my own skin.”
Cardi even takes up for other stars. When Lizzo posted an emotional message about the effects cyberbullying had on her in August 2021, Cardi responded with words of encouragement.
“When you stand up for yourself they claim you [are] problematic and sensitive. When you don’t, they tear you apart until you crying like this,” she wrote on Twitter. “Whether you skinny, big [or] plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you. Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”
The two teamed up to take back their narratives in the hit ”Rumors,” which would garner an MTV Video Music Award nomination for “Best Song of Summer” that year.
