11 Delroy Lindo Movies That Define His Legendary Career

For more than five decades, Delroy Lindo has been one of the most beloved Black actors. With work spanning film, television, and stage, he is known for his commanding presence, versatile range, and artistic brilliance. With nearly 50 film roles to his credit, he has portrayed a wide array of characters, leaving an indelible imprint on Black cinema by delivering standout performances.

Lindo conveys an undeniable confidence and magnetic screen presence, allowing him to dominate a scene without raising his voice. From leading characters to supporting roles, his charisma and technical dexterity make each scene he appears in unforgettable. He’s a master of the art form, embodying every nuance of his characters.

Lindo has truly been one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets. But no longer. He’s earned a well-deserved nomination for the upcoming 98th Oscars — his first ever — in the supporting actor category for his powerful work in Sinners. Playing Delta Slim, a legendary local harmonica and piano player in Ryan Coogler’s masterpiece, Lindo’s performance shows why he’s one of the most captivating performers in Hollywood.

At the 83rd Golden Globes ceremony, Lindo revealed sage advice for young actors eager to build a career as long and storied as his: commit fully to the craft. “Whether you go to a formal acting program, whether you have to get on stage and do a series of plays,” he shared on the red carpet, “become as conversant with the craft of acting as you can be.” Ideals he has unmistakably lived by.

In celebration of his long-overdue Oscar nomination, here are 11 of Lindo’s best film performances.

Malcolm X, 1992

After years of honing his craft, Lindo gave a breakout performance in Spike Lee’s Malcom X. Portraying West Indian Archie, a ruthless gangster and boss of Harlem, he was a pivotal figure in the early life of Malcolm Little (played by Denzel Washington), serving as a mentor during Malcolm’s entry into the criminal underworld. Malcolm X would be the first of Lindo’s many collaborations with Lee.

Crooklyn, 1994

In Lee’s Crooklyn, Lindo stars as Woody Carmichael, a struggling musician and the patriarch of a large, vibrant family living in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn during the summer of 1973. Starring alongside the legendary Alfre Woodard, Lindo showed he had the chops for leading-man status in this Black cult classic.

Clockers, 1994

Clockers, another Spike Lee joint, is a gritty crime drama adapted from Richard Price’s novel of the same name. It tells the story of Ronald “Strike” Dunham (Mehki Phifer), a street-level drug dealer who becomes entangled in a murder investigation. Lindo portrays Rodney Little, a proprietor of a neighborhood junk shop as a front for his narcotics empire, where he oversees a group of street-level dealers known as “clockers.” Once again, Lindo gives scene-stealing performances in one of Lee’s most underrated films.

Get Shorty, 1995

While primarily known for his dramatic roles, Lindo showed his comedic side in Get Shorty.  Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and based on the novel by Elmore Leonard, Get Shorty satirizes the criminal underworld and Hollywood, showing how both mirror each other. Lindo plays Bo Catlett, a smooth-talking, high-end drug dealer and limousine service owner who is desperate to break into the Hollywood film industry. Alongside John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Rene Russo, and James Gandolfini, Lindo’s comic timing makes this screen ride soar.

The Cider House Rules, 1999

Lindo delivers a powerful, complex performance as Arthur Rose, the foreman of a crew of migrant apple pickers working at the Worthington apple orchard. He becomes a mentor to the protagonist, Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire), teaching him the nuances of the orchard and the “rules” of the cider house. In one of his most overlooked performances, Lindo conveys the nuances of his complex character with stunning clarity.

Gone In 60 Seconds, 2000

In one of the highest-grossing films of 2000, Lindo plays Detective Roland Castlebeck, an experienced LAPD investigator in the Auto Theft Division. He’s on the trail of Randall “Memphis” Raines (Nicolas Cage), an iconic car thief. Castlebeck has a personal vendetta against Raines, as he’s been chasing him for years. In this high-stakes thriller, Lindo was more than equipped to be at the center of the action.

Romeo Must Die, 2000

As hip-hop and R&B stars became fixtures in film, Lindo found himself bringing his brilliant acting to a new generation and a new audience in Romeo Must Die. Lindo portrays Isaak O’Day, the head of an organized crime family in Oakland, who wants to transition into a legitimate business. Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the film chronicles the battles between African American and Chinese-American gangs representing the feuding families. As always, Lindo’s strong performance helped the film become a box office success.

This Christmas, 2007

This Black holiday classic is arguably one of the best Christmas films of all time. Lindo plays Joseph “Joe” Black, a church deacon and partner of the family matriarch, Shirley “Ma’Dere” Whitfield (Loretta Divine). As all of the Whitfield children return home, they attempt to overcome their many trials and obstacles during the happiest time of the year.

Da 5  Bloods, 2020

While memes of dancing in the film have become legendary, Lindo’s performance in Da 5 Bloods is even better. Also starring Jonathan Majors, Clarke Peters, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Norm Lewis, and Isaiah Whitlock Jr., the film follows four aging Vietnam War veterans. The group returns to the country in search of the remains of their fallen squad leader and to unearth a treasure they buried while serving there.

The Harder They Fall, 2022

This epic Black Western centers on outlaw Nat Love’s quest for vengeance against his old enemy, Rufus Buck. For his role portraying Bass Reaves, Lindo won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role as Bass Reaves, the formidable first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Lindo shines alongside an all-Black principal cast featuring Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Lakeith Stanfield, RJ Cyler, and more.

Sinners, 2025

Set in the 1930s Jim Crow-era South, this supernatural horror thriller blends themes of vampirism, cosmology, race, blues music, and Prohibition. Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners has earned critical acclaim, receiving a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations. It’s a box-office smash, grossing more than $360 million worldwide. After 50 years of excellent acting, Lindo finally earned his first Oscar nomination for his incredible depiction of Delta Slim, a soulful but alcoholic blues musician.
