The 2026 Met Gala theme, “Fashion Is Art,” reads like a revelation to some, but Black fashion has been operating in that language long before it was framed for museum walls. Black designers have always treated garments as sculpture, memory and message, building silhouettes that carry culture as much as they carry form.
From precise tailoring to expressive embellishment, the work has never been just about getting dressed; it has been about being seen on your own terms. What the Met is catching up to now is a practice that has always existed: Black style as fine art, authored in real time and worn with intention.
