Tony Award winners Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Take Me Out) announced the contenders for the 2024 Tony Awards this morning, and there’s lots to smile about.
Hell’s Kitchen, a fictionalized account of singer-songwriter Alicia Keys’ teen years featuring her music, received a nomination for Best Musical, along with Illinoise, The Outsiders, Suffs and Water for Elephants. Jaja’s African Hair Braiding received a nomination for Best Play.
EBONY darling Maleah Joi Moon scored a Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her work in Hell’s Kitchen. Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical include theater veterans Dorian Harewood for The Notebook and Brian Darcy James for Days of Wine and Roses.
William Jackson Harper and Leslie Odom Jr. earned nods in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Uncle Vanya and Purlie Victorious, A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch, respectively.
The 77th Tony Awards will air live on Sunday, June 16, 2024, on CBS and stream concurrently on Paramount+. Academy Award winner Arianna DeBose will return as host.
