‘Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl’ is Coming in 2027

Many of us remember where we were when Michael Jackson hit the Super Bowl halftime stage, and now fans can relive that moment from a new perspective. A new documentary is coming to screens to commemorate Michael Jackson’s record-breaking 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance. Coming in February 2027, Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl follows the King of Pop as he prepares for his Rose Bowl performance. It will feature never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team, showing how he turned the Super Bowl halftime show into the biggest spectacle in pop culture.

Jackson truly transformed the Super Bowl halftime show from a largely overlooked intermission into one of television’s most anticipated events. Before Jackson, the slot typically featured marching bands and artists past their prime. After his performance, blockbuster acts like U2, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, and Bad Bunny graced the stage.

We can also thank the Wayans family for Jackson’s performance after their 1992 halftime special, where In Living Color planned a halftime special including live and pre-taped skits. The show garnered nearly 30 million viewers

Afterward, the NFL took note and went big the next year, landing Michael Jackson as the performer and drawing about 133.4 million viewers to the 1993 Super Bowl.

Jackson’s set featured indelible choreography and costumes. He blended dance with an emotional performance through a setlist that featured “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” “We Are the World,” and “Heal the World.”

Bao Nguyen directed and produced the documentary and was also at the forefront of the Netflix “We Are the World” documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop. Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, and Lauren Gaffney produced the 2027 documentary for Skydance Sports; John Branca for Optimum Productions; and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films.
