Solange Knowles is having a busy fourth quarter, following her recent announcement of an archival library. She was also appointed as the first Scholar in Residence at the USC Thornton School of Music, marking a significant milestone for the institution.
She will begin her three-year residency in the program this week, where she will contribute to the development of the school’s music curation program. This appointment reflects growing recognition of the importance of diverse voices in music and arts education. Solange, an acclaimed artist known for her innovative fusion of genres, brings a unique perspective that blends music, culture, and social justice.
“For decades now, I’ve watched the evolution of music and music curation, and I feel like I have something adequate to add to the conversation,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “I feel really inspired by the idea of my 15-year-old self being able to have someone sort of walk me through the footsteps of what I was about to embark on. So if I can, in any role, be a vessel of guidance, it really just sort of warms my heart that I am given the opportunity to be in that space.”
Solange’s career, characterized by her exploration of themes such as identity, empowerment, and mental health, resonates deeply with contemporary audiences, making her an ideal figure to inspire and educate students at USC.
In her new role, Solange will curate conversations and workshops focused on students, collaborating with members of her Saint Heron team. One of these workshops will center on “The Making of Eldorado Ballroom,” a renowned series that she brought to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in October 2024. Additionally, she will participate in an upcoming symposium at USC, where she will discuss the contributions of women in classical music and the work of composer Julia Perry.
This initiative aligns with a wider trend in academia to integrate real-world experiences and diverse influences into education. By collaborating with esteemed artists like Solange, institutions like the USC Thornton School of Music aim to prepare students not just as musicians but as informed creators. Through this partnership, Solange is slated to teach a class at the school in collaboration with Saint Heron, King, and other faculty, which will “explore the process of constructing curatorial frameworks alongside the context, craft and creation of musical landscapes,” according to USC.
