‘Reasonable Doubt’’s Jax Was Shot. Raamla Mohamed Hunter Reveals the Why Behind the Choice

It answers the question fans have been asking since season three of Reasonable Doubt ended with a literal bang: Who did Monica shoot? The season four trailer reveals it was Jax Stewart.

After leaving her old firm to start her own practice, Jax (Emayatzy Corinealdi) is now in a hospital bed, hooked up to life-saving machines and fighting like hell as those around her pray for her recovery.

While the trailer answers one question, fans are raising another: Will Jax survive? Reasonable Doubt has always run on Jax’s ability to take charge of a crisis, even as her own life unravels.

Having Jax be the shooting victim was a path series creator and showrunner Raamla Mohamed Hunter was certain she had to take. “I knew who people might have thought it would be, and I also knew that I wasn’t going to do that,” she shared with EBONY.

“Audiences are very smart, so I do find myself having to make sure things are unexpected…They are really familiar with cinematic language and may be able to figure it out.” It keeps Hunter and her writing team on their toes as they craft those “OMG” moments.

“I’m a fan of television, so if my mind can be blown, or when my husband and I are watching, I like to be thrilled and excited by it,” she shared. “It does brighten your day.”

In the trailer, a familiar face appears at Jax’s bedside: Morris Chestnut returns as fellow attorney Corey Cash. Could the shooting change their dynamic? (Jax’s husband, Lewis, might have something to say about that.) Also returning are Brandee Evans as Monica, McKinley Freeman as Lewis, Angela Grovey as Krystal, Tim Jo as Daniel and Joseph Sikora as Bill Sterling.

Season four brings new faces as well. Eric Cropper, a wealthy R&B artist and longtime client of Jax’s, is played by Durrell “Tank” Babbs. He’s at the center of a growing media crisis that could threaten the firm’s future. Meagan Good joins the cast as district attorney Regina Harris, while La La Anthony plays Eric’s first wife, Melina. Rutina Wesley appears as entertainment journalist Desiree Grant, and Taylor Polidore Williams plays Eric’s second wife, Brooke.

Reasonable Doubt season four premieres October 6 on Hulu with three episodes, followed by new episodes on Thursdays.
