When Hermès announced that Grace Wales Bonner would take over as Creative Director of Menswear, it felt like more than another game of fashion musical chairs. It was confirmation of what many of us at EBONY have been saying for years. The world of luxury menswear has been orbiting around Grace’s gravity for a while now, it just finally decided to give her the throne.
“I am deeply honoured to be entrusted with the role of Creative Director of Hermès Menswear. It is a dream realized to embark on this new chapter, following in a lineage of inspired craftspeople and designers. I wish to express my gratitude to Pierre-Alexis Dumas and Axel Dumas for the opportunity to bring my vision to this magical house.” Grace Wales Bonner
The London-born designer, 35, is stepping into the role after Véronique Nichanian’s historic 37-year run, one of the longest in modern fashion. For a house built on quiet mastery, this is a poetic next move. Wales Bonner has long operated at the intersection of heritage and modernity, merging European tailoring with Afro-Atlantic storytelling in a way that redefines what luxury can look and feel like when Black hands are at the helm.
Since launching her label in 2014 after graduating from Central Saint Martins, Wales Bonner has become a scholar of silhouette. Her designs hum with history, precise cuts, sacred references, a sense of memory sewn into every hem. Her work with adidas Originals and her LVMH Prize win in 2016 did more than put her on the map, they proved that intellect and identity can live comfortably in the same garment.
Hermès has long been a temple of craft, but this appointment is about more than craftsmanship. It is about recalibration. Under Wales Bonner, expect the house’s equestrian polish to meet a deeper cultural rhythm, one rooted in diaspora and duality. As she put it, this new chapter is “a dream realized,” one that carries both her academic rigor and her ancestral pride.
At EBONY, we have been vocal about moments like this. In our feature “Breaking the Echo Chamber: How Black Women Are Reshaping Luxury Menswear Without the Industry’s Approval,” we said she was quietly campaigning for her rightful seat in luxury’s upper ranks. Now she has it.
We are looking forward to her first collection. It will be refined, yes, but charged with spirit. The kind of collection that does not need noise to make a statement. Grace Wales Bonner did not just arrive at Hermès; she expanded what it means to belong there.
