For Brian Henry, music has always been an integral part of his life. He realized just how deep his passion ran when, after snapping at his dad for accidentally popping his Janet Jackson cassette tape, he understood that his love for music went far beyond surface-level admiration. It was something he needed to be a part of.
As the musical director for the EBONY Power 100 Gala, Henry harnesses his musical knowledge and keen skills to curate a vibe that not only entertains but also resonates with the audience’s emotions. “There are so many things that are going on in the world right now that will have us disheartened, but the beautiful thing about music is that music is able to touch, move and inspire us in a way that uplifts us beyond any challenge that we are facing in the world,” Henry told EBONY.
Beyond the event itself, Henry’s vision extends to collaboration among the people. This collaborative spirit was present at Power 100, where many of the honorees are trailblazers in their fields, often striving to break barriers and uplift their communities. Under his direction, he created an environment where creativity flows freely, allowing each performer to shine while contributing to a collective experience greater than the sum of its parts.
“It’s such a full circle, beautiful opportunity to see Black culture uplifted and presented in such a high vibrational way, while growing up with this publication, and now having the opportunity to literally bring it home by serving as music director for this is just phenomenal,” he said.
This focus not only enriches the performances but also pays homage to the event’s cultural significance. The music becomes a vessel through which the audience can connect with the honorees’ journeys, reflecting their struggles, triumphs and aspirations. “I’ve been a professional DJ and entertainer for 15 years now, and opportunities such as these keep me inspired, because it really allows me to flex creative muscles in new ways,” he said.

“I think that continuously aligning with God’s purpose for my life and shining bright in a way that encourages others to do the same,” he said. “I serve as a catalyst for moving us forward. There are so many points of resistance that sometimes prevent us from doing the same. For me, so much of my mission for music direction is a function of the greater purpose, and to shine all of my gifts in a way that inspires you to do the same with your respective gifts.”
