There comes a point when every vacation starts looking suspiciously like work. You land, unpack just enough to find your laptop charger, spend the next three days bouncing between dinners, events and whatever content you promised yourself you’d capture before boarding the flight home, wondering why you needed a vacation from your vacation. This trip to Miami was different. I wasn’t chasing an itinerary or trying to prove I maximized every hour. I wanted to disappear for a few days and remember what it felt like to rest with intention. The Standard Spa, Miami Beach became exactly the place for that kind of reset, where wellness isn’t treated like another luxury amenity but the entire reason you came.

I’ve learned that I don’t really know how to unplug unless I create rituals around it, so naturally my carry-on looked less like luggage and more like a mobile beauty closet. Somewhere between my swimsuit and linen shirts were Chanel’s La Mousse cleanser, Humanrace’s Smoothing Body Scrub that I used in the shower for the first time and brought them back home and now they’re cemented in my bathroom.

My beauty bag was packed with the products that make slowing down feel intentional rather than indulgent. La Mer’s Renewal Oil and Chanel’s massage accessory became my nightly ritual, while Chanel Le Lift Flash Eye Patches, Sulwhasoo’s First Care Activating Mask, Christian Dior eye patches, Topicals’ Faded eye masks and KNC Beauty’s collagen lip mask kept my skin looking as rested as I was beginning to feel. Even something as simple as Vabare’s Show Off Compressed Towels made the routine feel a little more luxurious, proving that sometimes the smallest details are the ones that complete the experience.

The Standard practically invites you to slow down. The property sits quietly on Biscayne Bay, far enough removed from South Beach’s constant energy that the pace immediately shifts the moment you arrive. My mornings became a ritual I actually looked forward to. After washing my face, I’d start with my Shark LED mask, then use my NuFACE microcurrent device before moving into my skincare routine. Once my serums and moisturizer were applied, I’d finish with Therabody’s skincare wand to help work the products into my skin before heading out the door for the day. My beauty bag was admittedly overflowing, enough to make TSA wonder if I planned on opening a spa in Miami, but I’ve always believed luxury isn’t about excess. It’s about consistency and having the time to enjoy the rituals that make me feel like myself.

One of the highlights of my stay was The Standard’s Double Lift facial massage, which somehow managed to feel both deeply relaxing and surprisingly corrective. I spend most of my days looking down at a screen, editing stories, answering emails and pitching ideas, and somewhere along the way the tension settled into my face without my realizing it. The treatment released that tightness almost immediately, sculpting, lifting and encouraging circulation in a way that made my entire face feel lighter. It wasn’t about looking younger. It was about looking less tired, and there is a difference.

Dinners at Lido Bayside Grill became another reminder that wellness extends beyond the spa. There is something restorative about eating slowly while looking out over Biscayne Bay, watching the sunset, allowing dinner to become an experience instead of another task squeezed between meetings. Fresh pasta and seafood, colorful vegetables and simple cocktails tasted better because nobody was asking me for revisions or wondering if I’d hit publish yet. The only decision I had to make was whether to head back to the spa or spend another hour by the pool.
The pool quickly became my favorite office, except there was no work involved. My beach bag was filled with products that protected my skin as much as they elevated the experience. Supergoop!’s Play SPF 50 Body Mist made sunscreen reapplication something I actually looked forward to, while the Play Sunscreen Stick stayed within arm’s reach for easy touch-ups throughout the afternoon. Eadem’s Ultra-Calming Rescue Mist became my favorite post-sun refresh, instantly cooling my skin after hours in the Miami heat, while Crowned Skin’s body oil added a healthy glow that looked even better under the Florida sun. Salt & Stone’s Santal & Vetiver body oil finished everything with the kind of understated fragrance that feels expensive without announcing itself. As someone who spends much of the year covering beauty, it felt especially meaningful that several of the products I reached for most came from Black-owned brands. Supporting founders who continue creating thoughtful skincare for melanated skin made the ritual feel even more personal.

One afternoon, I made my way over to the Nobu Hotel Miami Beach, where I claimed a private cabana on the beach before heading into Esencia Wellness Spa for a Bamboo Fusion Massage. Like most millennials, I’ve developed the unfortunate habit of carrying my stress in my shoulders without realizing it. Years of typing, editing and spending entire days hunched over a laptop have quietly turned tension into my default posture. The warm bamboo tools worked through every stubborn knot with remarkable precision, releasing muscles I hadn’t consciously relaxed in months. By the end of the treatment, I could literally feel my shoulders sitting lower than when I walked in, and I realized how rarely I allow myself to fully exhale.

What surprised me most about the trip wasn’t that the spa treatments were excellent or that the beauty products performed exactly as I’d hoped. It was how naturally luxury hospitality and my own beauty rituals complemented one another. One elevated the other. The hotel created the environment, while the skincare routines became moments of mindfulness that stretched beyond the treatment room. Together they transformed a short getaway into something that felt restorative long after checkout.

We spend so much time talking about self-care as if it’s something that can be squeezed into fifteen-minute windows between meetings or accomplished with a single serum purchase. This trip reminded me that wellness is cumulative. It’s built through small rituals repeated consistently, thoughtful meals eaten without distraction, treatments that encourage you to slow down and products you genuinely enjoy using instead of rushing through. I came to Miami hoping to rest, but I left remembering that sometimes the most luxurious thing you can give yourself isn’t another reservation or another experience. It’s permission to stop performing productivity long enough to simply be.
