The MTV Video Music Awards red carpet has never been the place to behave. This is the carpet where fashion is supposed to be loud, sexy, slightly ridiculous and memorable enough that we are still talking about it years later. Tonight’s arrivals understood that assignment. Instead of one overwhelming trend, the carpet became a collision of feathers, leather, crystals, exaggerated proportions and barely-there dressing, with enough personality to remind us that getting dressed should still be fun.
Black was anything but basic. One of the night’s strongest gowns took sheer dressing into much more dramatic territory with intricate lace, a plunging neckline and an explosion of feathers around the neck, hips and sweeping hem. The silhouette was undeniably sexy, but the feathered detailing gave it an almost old-school showgirl quality. Another black gown went in a completely different direction, hugging the body before exploding into a metallic sculptural collar that looked somewhere between a flower, armor and an art installation. Both proved that when everyone is wearing black, texture and proportion are what separate a dress from a moment.
Camp also clocked in for work. An icy blue polka-dot mini with enormous puffed sleeves, exaggerated hips and a matching wide-brim hat looked like someone took Sunday-best dressing, blew it up by 300 percent and sent it straight to the VMAs. Nearby, a sheer black mini covered in oversized sparkling green butterflies leaned into Y2K party-girl energy. Neither look whispered, and thank God for that.
Leather had its own little takeover. A distressed brown leather moto jacket worn open against the chest with matching pants and fuzzy boots gave rugged biker energy without feeling like costume. Another look paired a leopard-print jacket with sleek black leather trousers, while one of the sexiest moments of the evening came courtesy of brown lace-up leather pants sitting dangerously low on the hips with a tiny coordinating bra top and oversized belt. It felt like an early-2000s music video walked onto the carpet in 2026, and that is exactly the kind of nostalgia the VMAs can handle.
For those craving pure glamour, a silver crystal-covered mini delivered it with a high neckline, open sides and strands of fringe dripping from the hem. Even the evening’s more traditional tuxedo moment came with enough attitude to keep things interesting: a crisp white dinner jacket, black lapels, bow tie, gloves and sunglasses turned classic formalwear into something much cooler.
The best part of tonight’s carpet is that nobody needed to agree on what glamour should look like. Some went camp. Some went sexy. Some went theatrical. Some gave us leather, skin and a little bit of foolishness. And isn’t that what the VMAs are for? Save tasteful restraint for another awards show. Tonight, fashion came outside to have a good time.
