For one night, the biggest names in sports swap postgame tunnel fits for custom tailoring, couture gowns and enough diamonds to rival championship rings. Before a single award was handed out, the red carpet reminded everyone that today’s athletes aren’t just defining their respective sports. They’re helping define fashion.
And if tonight proved anything, it’s that Black athletes continue to set the tone.
Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens arrived looking like they had stepped straight out of a luxury campaign. Biles shimmered in a champagne satin gown with sculptural draping, a dramatic thigh-high slit and enough movement to make every photo feel cinematic. Owens matched the moment in a rich chocolate double-breasted tuxedo finished with oversized satin lapels and understated jewelry that elevated rather than distracted. Together, they looked like the kind of couple fashion houses dream about dressing.
Jayson Tatum once again proved that simplicity can be the loudest statement in the room. His fitted olive tank, layered diamond chains and perfectly tailored trousers felt like the evolution of modern menswear. It was relaxed, expensive and refreshingly effortless. The NBA star continues to blur the line between athlete and style star without ever looking like he’s trying too hard.
French Montana reminded everyone that a great suit never goes out of style. His ivory pinstriped double-breasted jacket paired with wide-leg black trousers felt timeless with just enough personality thanks to a patterned tie. Kysre Gondrezick delivered one of the night’s strongest fashion moments in a sculptural black illusion gown outlined in crystal embellishments, while Saquon Barkley embraced maximalism with a marbled printed suit that somehow felt both playful and polished.
Elsewhere, the carpet leaned heavily into relaxed tailoring, oversized proportions and rich monochromatic palettes. Navy crossover suiting, oversized bomber-inspired jackets, flowing trousers and crisp white suiting confirmed that athletes continue to influence the direction of menswear just as much as the designers creating it.
That is what makes the ESPYS so important, especially for Black athletes.
Yes, the evening celebrates championships, record-breaking performances and unforgettable moments on the field, court and track. But it also recognizes something bigger. Black athletes have become cultural leaders whose impact stretches far beyond sports. They dictate trends, shape conversations, build businesses, inspire communities and remind us that personal style can be just as powerful as athletic performance.
The trophies may be the reason everyone gathers. The fashion is why we’ll still be talking about it tomorrow.
