In Relationship Goals – now airing on Prime Video – Kelly Rowland and Clifford “Method Man” Smith play singles seeking the right rules to make love last. But in real life, these two are clocking decades of commitment. Both happily married, they’ve mastered the rules to make unions last.
For Rowland, it’s all about communication. “Talk,” she declared to EBONY in a recent interview about her marriage to industry executive husband, Tim Weatherspoon. The two wed in a small ceremony in Costa Rica in 2014. “When you hold stuff in and don’t communicate, you’re just a ticking time bomb.”
And no, those conversations can’t just be on date night.
“Two people should always be in constant communication in some sort of way because you’re ever evolving, ever growing, ever learning,” Rowland explained. “It’s nice to talk about what you like, what you’re uncomfortable about — all of it. It’s the key.”
Smith keeps his relationship mantras short, sharp, and unmistakably grown-man-coded. “Keep people out of your business,” he declared. He and his wife, Tamika Smith, are celebrating a milestone this year: 25 years of marriage. The couple, who have been together for more than 30 years, officially said “I do” in 2001.
If you do the math, Rowland and Smith are sitting on nearly 40 years of marriage experience combined, so any nugget of wisdom they drop is pure gospel. It’s no surprise they both believe in dating with a purpose, a message that echoes throughout the film.
You don’t wanna just be existing, giving somebody the run around,” Rowland explained. “You wanna see what their intentions are so that you’re able to either decide if you wanna take this journey together or not.”
Smith summed it up ever more succinctly: “Be assertive with your wants.”
