Historic Wins Flood Polling Results For 2026 Midterm Elections

November 3, 2026 marked Election Day a historic day for United States voters after having an active Democratic pull across the country. Though initial election result predictions leaned heavily on historic data for forecasting, many states left voters in awe with their ultimate results. States such as South Carolina, Texas, Kansas, and Iowa who have historically voted Republican through the last few elections now have Democratic representation in their state’s leadership.

Black women faced a heavy undertaking this election season as they sought roles that hadn’t previously had diverse representation and succeeded in taking the mantle. Newly elected officials include Stacey Plaskett as the first Black women to be elected governor of a United States territory (U.S. Virgin Islands), Juliana Stratton becoming the first Black woman to be elected lieutenant governor of Illinois, Adrienne Adams who was elected as the first Black female lieutenant governor for the state of New York, and Keisha Lance Bottoms becoming the first Black female governor in our nation’s history. As well as the first within her respective state of Georgia.

James Talarico has become the first Democrat to hold a Senate seat for the state of Texas in over thirty years. Gina Hinojosa made history alongside Talarico with her historic win as Texas’ new governor. This win makes her the first person and the first woman of Mexican descent to do so in the state. These wins helped shift the state to vote Democratic and flip voting patterns after a long history of being considered a Republican-majority state. New Mexico also now has a female governor named Deb Haaland, who also set a trend as the first in the state to be elected to the position as a Native American woman.

At just 29 years old, Melat Kiros of Colorado blazed a new trail for Gen Z with her monumental win in being elected to the House of Representatives. This win also made her the first Black woman to represent the state of Colorado in the House and the first Gen Z woman to be elected to Congress, making her one of the youngest in history to serve at that level alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who was also re-elected this election cycle. Hakeem Jeffries broke ground during this cycle’s midterms after being elected as Speaker of the House. This win makes him the first Black Speaker in the nation’s history.

The voting power channeled by voters this season has allowed Democrats to regain control of the U.S. Senate, and the party will now have control of Congress. The party also holds a majority of the House, making its voting and decision-making power stronger than that of Republicans.
