For the 2026 Golden Globes, Black-Led Projects Are Critically and Commericially Recognized

We thrive when we make it on our terms. That’s the takeaway from the 83rd Golden Globes nominations, which were announced on December 8.

Ryan Coogler’s epic Sinners earned multiple nominations, including Best Picture (Drama) and Cinematic & Box Office Achievement: the only film this year to be nominated in both categories. With the movie earning $367 million worldwide, it proves that Coogler’s unique vision for a musically compelling horror film succeeded not just as a critical masterpiece but also as a commercial success that crossed racial, age and gender lines.

Coogler also received nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay for the film, which delves into themes of discrimination, religion and redemption. Michael B. Jordan, receiving his first Golden Globe nomination, will compete in the Best Actor (Drama) category for his dual role as entrepreneurial twin brothers Smoke and Stack.

Jordan kept his reaction to his nomination short and sweet. He posted the lineup featuring his name in the Best Male Actor Motion Picture Drama lineup with a note stating, “Beyond grateful!! Thank you, Golden Globes.”

One Battle After Another stars Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti are also basking in the glow of their first Golden Globe nominations. They have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, in a film that also delves deep into themes of race, equality and women’s empowerment.

Tessa Thompson has been nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for her work in Hedda. She, along with director Nia DaCosta’s vision, transformed Hedda Gabler into a story told through the eyes of bisexual Black women of the 1950s, bringing a powerful new dimension of intimacy, cultural specificity and dramatic intensity.

Sterling K. Brown received a Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Drama nomination for Paradise, but he isn’t only the series’ lead actor. He’s working behind the scenes as an executive producer, making number one on the call sheet decisions about how a Black man in power — and in peril — should be portrayed.

Ohter nominations include the Quinta Brunson helmed Abbott Elementary in the Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy category; Cynthia Erivo, Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Wicked: For Good; The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy; Rashida Jones for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television in Black Mirror; Adolescence star Ashley Walters and Severance‘s Tramell Tillman in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television category; Kevin Hart: Acting My Age special for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television and more.

When brought to the screen in stories that authenticate our voices in expected and unexpected places, the world listens.

The 83rd Golden Globes will air live on CBS on January 11, 2026, and stream on Paramount+.
