We’re back at Hillman University with the sequel to A Different World, with a first look at the legacy cast returning for the series this September.
The cast includes the return of Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne), Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert), Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson) and Charnele Brown (Kim) hanging out in The Pit, where many of the major storylines when the show first aired in the 1990s took place.
The newly released image is filled with nostalgia, instantly transporting longtime fans back to one of television’s most beloved fictional HBCUs. More than just a campus hangout, The Pit served as the heart of Hillman, where friendships were tested, romances blossomed, and conversations about race, politics, identity and young adulthood unfolded. Seeing the original cast reunited in the familiar setting signals that the new series plans to honor the legacy that made A Different World a cultural touchstone while introducing a new generation to Hillman’s vibrant community.
The sequel follows Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon, third from left), the daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, as she begins her own journey at Hillman University. While the spotlight shifts to a new class of students navigating college life, the returning cast will help bridge the gap between generations, offering guidance, wisdom and, undoubtedly, a few laughs along the way. The new cast includes Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall and Kennedi Reece.
When A Different World premiered in 1987, it quickly evolved into far more than a college sitcom. The series became a defining portrait of Black campus life, inspiring countless students to pursue higher education and shining a national spotlight on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Its influence can still be felt today, with many HBCU graduates citing the show as part of their decision to attend one.
With familiar faces back on campus and a new generation ready to make its mark, the sequel has the opportunity to celebrate the enduring legacy of Hillman while exploring what Black college life looks like today. If the first look is any indication, class is officially back in session.
