With every swipe and scroll on social media, whether it be Instagram or TikTok, you can count on finding mixes, mashups and transitions to every song known to man. As someone who’s contributed to the timeline once or twice, it’s evident that DJs on social media influence which songs go viral, how new songs are heard, and how current songs blend with hits from years past.
Through my own efforts, I quickly learned one crucial thing about the people creating these sounds: Black DJs, especially those on TikTok, are the selectors driving this influx of popular sounds, dance trends and viral mashups that keep our timelines fresh and forever changing. In the process, they are also keeping Black music history in circulation, connecting generations of listeners and shaping how songs continue to move through culture.
Two DJs Behind the Scroll Sound Off
Let’s start with Bianca, otherwise known to most as DJ Hunny Bee. The Florida-born, California-based DJ content creator has been DJing since 2019, even though music has been a part of her life all her life.
“I grew up doing music, starting in the church, so I was always really involved in that world,” she told EBONY.

This love for music, whether through listening to underground artists or studying the music scenes she loved, helped to cultivate this growing desire to create and interact within the music world. After honing her DJ skills during the COVID-19 lockdown, she started her TikTok and YouTube pages in 2021 and began posting her work online.
“I actually started making videos as soon as I started learning how to DJ. I just felt like that would be the best way to market myself; I felt like content creation was gonna be a thing.”
After a year of posting, she surpassed 100,000 followers on TikTok and has continued to cultivate a library of mixes and mashups that have made major waves online.
For HunnyBee, her “Villain Era” mix series, which started in 2022, showed her that the work was landing in the right places.
“That was when I felt like I was like, okay, I’m really reaching the type of people who resonate with what I like.”
She’s now reached over 830,000 followers on TikTok. She has amassed millions of views across various mixes, like her famous “Yukon x UP” mashup with Justin Bieber, or most recently, producing an official remix to Lucky Daye’s newest single “Nowhere Fast.”
Whether it’s through production work, content creation or playing events like Everyday People and Essence Fest, balancing it all can be a challenge. Still, she makes sure that despite it all, she has room for “other slices in her pie” of DJ work.
DJ Hunny Bee believes that “music keeps TikTok moving,” serving as the heartbeat to the app’s continued success and cultural dominance. In those terms, she is one of the essential valves that help continue creating the backing track of our lives.

Another great example is DJ Vic.
The Baltimore-born and based DJ has a rooted lineage of music. His father, DJ Tanz, served as a main pillar in his start in the DJ world.
“When I was 13, my dad tried to force me in front of the board to see how I liked it; at the time, I didn’t.”
Vic later focused his efforts on football in college, where he eventually quit the sport and looked into reigniting his passion for DJing.
“I ended up really wanting to get good at it. I ended up practicing all day for two years and became a process of progression that took form years later.”
This reintroduction to his path in the DJ space, alongside inspiration from DJs like Zillion and Zack Fox, allowed him to start gaining momentum in his own lane. Even so, when he started his posting journey in 2023, growth took time.
“At one point, I wanted to quit. I was fed up, a good amount of time had passed, and my views weren’t where I wanted them to be.”
Still persevering through the algorithm, Vic’s explosion onto the timeline came in the form of his series of mixes of “No Pole” by Don Toliver.
Since then, he’s amassed over 377,000 followers on TikTok, with notices from celebrities like Tyla, Zara Larsson, and Yung Miami, as well as from brands like American Eagle, SoundCloud, and more.
However, the reactions from other regular people have been the most rewarding.
“A couple of times, when I follow people, they screenshot it and post it. It’s like when you meet a celebrity. I don’t look at myself that way, but when you see that, it’s crazy.”
Even with all the growth and numbers, he still centers his work outside of the algorithm.
“I’m very determined that I’m playing for the people; that’s my motto when I’m going about stuff”

Jacob Dior is a New York City/Philly-based DJ whose blend of classic flips of R&B and Hip Hop songs has caught the attention of multiple artists across the genres. Most notably, his mashup of GloRilla’s “TGIF” and Beyoncé’s “Diva” was featured in the Cowboy Carter Tour and the Glorious Tour in 2025. Additionally, he produced the song “Lover Girl” for Megan Thee Stallion, adding more to an already impressive catalog of mashups and mixes that can turn any function up.
