Chlöe Bailey put Storm back at the center of the internet with one simple post. The Strung star wrote, “I’m a Black girl who makes beats, builds Legos, & reads comics,” with pics of Storm adjacent, and opened the floodgates to one of the most anticipated castings in Marvel fandom: who will play Storm in the MCU?

The internet instantly made its position perfectly clear: it’s time to cast a dark-skinned actress to play Ororo Monroe.
Since the character came into existence in the comics, Storm has been depicted as a dark-skinned Black woman of African heritage, with her signature white hair and blue eyes. But Hollywood hasn’t really followed that visual mandate, with Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp stepping into the role in past incarnations. Even Shipp herself has supported seeing a darker-skinned actress take on the role.
For fans, Storm represents a rare opportunity to cast a dark-skinned Black woman in a major franchise role after decades of lighter-skinned actresses being given those opportunities more often. And with Storm historically depicted as dark-skinned, fans want the screen version to finally reflect that.
As the casting draws near, rumors are already flying about Marvel’s process, including online reports of a search for actresses with more “Afro-coded” hair, which could signal that Marvel is leaning toward bringing an actress who more visually matches Storm’s comic-book description to the screen.
Fans of Marvel superheroes have seen dark-skinned Black women throughout the MCU, including Danai Gurira as Okoye, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15. But few have been positioned for the kind of long-term, superpowered franchise visibility that Storm could potentially offer.
While Storm’s reported debut in Black Panther 3 has not been officially confirmed by Marvel, the character is widely expected to be part of the MCU’s future X-Men plans. If she becomes part of that next generation, Storm has the potential for sustainable appearances throughout the franchise, including the MCU’s X-Men reboot and future Avengers ensemble films as we approach 2030.
When you think about it, it’s a chance for a whole generation to witness Storm’s arc like any other cherished MCU character, building a relationship with the woman behind the white hair that could last years, or even decades.
And that’s why people want to see a dark-skinned actress in the role, not just because the character’s history and visual identity call for it. It’s a real opportunity for the actress chosen to build a highly visible, sustainable and financially lucrative career, the kind of franchise opportunity not always afforded to dark-skinned actresses, even when past roles have explicitly been described with dark-skinned characters. It’s time for the change.
While names like Jodi Turner Smith and Anna Diop have been bandied around to take over the role — especially if the series leans into the X-Men: Evolution route — here are five more incredibly talented and beautiful actresses who could rock Storm’s signature silver tresses.
Jayme Lawson
There’s a lot of buzz around the actress who stole hearts and fought off the undead in Sinners. Lawson has already shown she can hold her own in a massive ensemble while still making audiences remember her when the credits roll.
Joy Sunday
The newly minted Emmy nominee for DTF St. Louis has popped on MCU Ororo fan cast boards, where she could trade in her Wednesday siren powers for Storm’s command of the elements. She already knows a little something about making supernatural abilities look effortless.
Laura Kariuki
Talk about a buzzing pedigree. The Kenyan-American actress played Jennifer Pierce on Black Lightning, where she had electrical-based abilities. Stepping into the role would give Marvel a chance for the actress to zap the role into something entirely her own.
Tamara Lawrance
The British import, seen in Time and The Man in My Basement, would be a natural addition to the heavily British talent already woven throughout the Black Panther universe. She has dramatic weight, a regal presence and relative freshness to make Ororo entirely her own.
Vivian Oparah
The Black British actress who won critical acclaim for her breakout role in Rye Lane would feel right at home with new Black Panther actor David Jonsson. They starred together in the British romantic comedy.
