Catch the Drip: A Breakdown of Jeffrey Wright’s Debonaire Style Over His Career

To say Jeffrey Wright knows his way around a red carpet would be a gross understatement. This leading man has become a recurring fixture at some of the most esteemed premieres and award shows in the entertainment industry and has become quite accustomed to leaving with some of these highly-coveted awards himself.

But if his respective Tony, Emmy or Golden Globe wins were not solid enough indicators of his comfortability with these big nights, it is duly reflected in his fashion stylings for these events. And when you’re talking about someone as creatively versatile as Wright, who has played iconic characters ranging from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Martin Luther King Jr., you are keen to expect a similar level of mutability in his dressing.

Ahead, we look at some of our February cover star’s most defining style moments.

The Name’s Wright, Jeffrey Wright

For the British premiere of No Time to Die, the 25th film of the James Bond series, Wright, who played Felix Leiter, showed that simplicity does not have to negate flair.

Rather than the traditional black wool or polyester tuxedo jackets we’ve become accustomed to seeing, Wright wore a velvet jacket by Emporio Armani. The immaculately tailored look added just enough emerald spice to the night without deviating too far from the clean, central theme of the look.

Seeing Red

Perhaps one of the most enduring aspects of Wright’s style is his fondness for color. He proves again that he is not scared to scale the ROYGBIV ladder, opting for an all-red suit for the 2022 Batman premiere. The white, chest-baring button-up adds a layer of effortless coolness you’d come to expect from someone who spends their free time catching waves. Cowabunga!

Chill, But Still a Big Deal

If there is anything Wright seems to enjoy more than playing iconic Black characters and breathing new life into beloved franchises, it’s t-shirts, well, mock-necks, to be specific. In an industry largely dominated by suits, both figuratively and literally, Wright has paved his own lane by leaning into comfortability, pairing his structured suits with more casual shirts underneath. A particularly great example of this was Wright’s cream suit and mock-neck combo he wore to the Black Excellence Brunch in November 2023. Excellent indeed.

A Classic Man

Throughout his career, Wright has more than established himself as someone not just willing but eager to step outside the box with their styling. Still, it is worth noting that the American Fiction actor can sport a classic tux like no other. Exhibit A: Wright in this Dior tuxedo for the 81st annual Golden Globes. The expert cut of the jacket, coupled with an Omega watch and a pair of David Yurman cufflinks, is just ubër chef’s kiss.
