The HBCU First Look Film Festival returns to Howard University this year, November 6 – 8. The yearly fest will once again bring together industry luminaries for cultural dialogues, screenings, and interactive workshops, amplifying this year’s theme: “Elevate Future Storytellers” for the third time.
This year’s HBCU First Look Film Festival celebrates actress Lynn Whitfield, Ryan Coogler, and Marsai Martin, who serves as this year’s HBCUFLF Creative Ambassador. Events will kick off at the Howard Theater, where the honorees will get their flowers. Whitfield will be honored at Cafe Mocha Radio’s 15th Anniversary Salute THEM Awards, and Coogler will receive the inaugural HBCU First LOOK ”I Aspire“ Global Impact Award presented in partnership with Howard University’s Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts.
The presentation especially means a lot to the Howard University community because Coogler and the late Boseman, who was a Bison, have made groundbreaking contributions to cinema. More specifically, their partnership in Black Panther set new standards for global representation, and the elevation of future storytellers is major. Whitfield is also a Howard University grad.
Other attendees include Ben’s Chili Bowl co-founder Virginia Ali, AARP EVP Edna Kane Williams, singer Kenny Lattimore, philanthropist Angel Gregoria, and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
