3 Jodie Turner-Smith Movie Roles That Remind Us She’s Fiercely Independent

We’re still reeling from the news that actress Jodie Turner-Smith is ending her marriage. The actress and April EBONY cover star filed divorce papers from fellow actor Joshua Jackson on October 2.

Turner-Smith initiated proceedings in a Los Angeles Superior Court nearly four years after the estranged couple said ‘I do” in 2019. Citing “irreconcilable differences” as the cause for the split, she has asked for 50/50 percent custody of their 3-year-old daughter, Juno Rose Diana Jackson, and is not seeking spousal support.

Even though we’re sad to hear about the dissolution of her union, we know that Turner-Smith will march on. Here are three movie roles that remind us that this is one fiercely independent woman.

Queen, Queen & Slim (2019)

In this heart-pounding road crime drama, Turner-Smith plays “Queen,” a defense attorney who finds herself on the run with her Tinder date “Slim” (Daniel Kaluuya) after killing an abusive police officer in an act of self-defense during a traffic stop. Turner-Smith’s performance keeps us on the edge of our seats in this screenplay by Lena Waithe.

Elisha “Eli” James, The Independent (2022)

The Jamaican-British beauty puts on her best American accent to play Eli, a D.C.-based reporter tracking down evidence that the first female Republican Presidential candidate is smuggling funds from the lottery to fund her super PAC. But Eli’s research only uncovers more twists and secrets in this riveting political drama.

Countess Sekou, Murder Mystery 2 (2023)

In this action comedy, Turner-Smith is aptly cast as a royal Countess who is the former fiancée of tech genius and billionaire Vikram “The Maharajah” Govindan. The gorgeous beauty and her faithful gal pal become prime suspects when he is kidnapped right before his upcoming nuptials to another woman.
